The Cambridgeshire Masonic Golf Association Annual Golf Away Day

The Cambridgeshire Masonic Golf Association held its Annual Golf Days at Belton Woods Hotel and Golf Course in early August. Fifteen finely-tuned Golfers attended the event, with not only our own PGM Bill Dastur but also Norfolk’s PGM Steven Allen, a very welcome and honorary member of Cambridgeshire.

In two days of incredibly tense and tough conditions the high standard of golf won though with the winners on day one being the team of Dastur, Allen and Brennan in the team event with Andy Goodman being the individual winner. The more important prizes of ‘Nearest the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’ went to John Evans and Andrew Long respectively.

After an evening of good company and excellent food plus wine, which was very generously provided by our PGM, the intrepid golfers set forth on a second day’s golf in what was predicted to be horrendous weather. However, our request for good weather had been heard and we were able to complete the round in very pleasant conditions.

Competition on the second day, if humanly possible, was even more fierce than the previous day, with the team of McDonald, Robertson and Brown taking the team honours with the storming Mick Harding taking the individual prize. The ‘Nearest the Pin’ wasn’t awarded as by a freak of nature the Green that we were aiming at kept moving(!) and the ‘Longest Drive’ was again won by Andrew Long. We think it’s something to do with the name, so there are rumours that next year we will be playing for the shortest drive!

It then came to the award of the overall winner. Thanks to storming Harding’s unbelievable golf on the second day he levelled the score of our own PGM and in fact on count-back had just pipped him at the post. In therefore in what the writer believes was a unparalleled show of bonhomie Bill presented Mick with the Away Day Trophy.

The whole event went extremely well with the courses and the hotel being excellent. We are hoping to repeat next year and are looking at venues, so a few more golfers would make the event even more exciting.
