While enjoying a recent holiday in Los Boliches, David Sowman had the distinct privilege of attending a meeting of Fuengirola 96 Lodge, an experience that proved both memorable and enriching.

On this occasion, the Lodge was honoured by the presence of the recently installed Grand Master of Spain, M.W. Bro Shaun Parsons Herrera. In addressing the Brethren, he spoke warmly and with evident pride, remarking that his first official engagement as Grand Master was to the very Lodge in which he had been initiated. This added a special significance to the evening and was clearly appreciated by all present.
Although there was no candidate for initiation, those in attendance were treated to a faultless delivery of the First Degree Charge, presented by a Master Mason with clarity, precision, and sincerity. It was an excellent demonstration of the high standard of ritual work upheld within the Lodge.
For David it was particularly pleasing to find that Fuengirola 96 is an English-speaking Lodge. The ritual follows Emulation workings, with a few local variations, and includes the traditional penalties in accordance with the decree of the Grand Lodge of Spain, to which the Lodge owes its allegiance. Of additional interest is the use of the “Queen of Sheba” workings for Installation ceremonies, something many visiting Brethren may not have previously witnessed.
The Lodge room itself reflects a practical adaptation to the Spanish climate, featuring a tiled floor which helps to keep the environment cool during the warmer months, an elegant blend of tradition and necessity.
Following the meeting, the Brethren enjoyed a most convivial festive board, where excellent Spanish cuisine was served. Dave was honoured to be invited to respond to the Visitors’ Toast, adding to what was already a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The visit also afforded him the opportunity to speak with the Grand Master regarding his recent Investiture, an event attended by the Pro Grand Master, further reinforcing the strong bonds of friendship and mutual respect within the wider Masonic community.
