Granta Lodge No 6179

The Masonic Hall, Newmarket

Granta Lodge was formed in 1945. The Lodge meets in Newmarket and is the only one of the four Newmarket Lodges that meets on a Saturday.

The lodge membership stands at around 35, around 20 of whom are active. We have a varied mix, both working and retired, with occupations ranging from ex-military and police, through to young professionals with young families. Former members have included members of the agricultural and haulage industries, with current members from the, amongst others, education, transport, tech and construction worlds.

Our meetings are held on the third Saturdays in March, May, September and November, commencing at 5 p.m. but members gather from 3.30 onwards to enjoy each other’s company, help set up the Lodge and finalise arrangements for the meeting. The meeting normally lasts 1.5 – 2 hours and is followed by a two-course dinner with cheese and biscuits. Proceedings are usually completed by 9 p.m. Rehearsals are held at 7 p.m. on the two Mondays immediately preceding each meeting.

Whilst members are predominantly English, we also have a couple of members from, or who live, or have lived, overseas. We pride ourselves on being a happy lodge and meeting late afternoon on a Saturday offers the chance of a relaxed atmosphere at the end of the week.
