Sometimes, the gift of time can be just as valuable as financial contributions and in Newmarket on 6th July that sentiment was clearly on display. A group of Cambridgeshire Freemasons, joined by family members, stepped up to support East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) by volunteering at their annual Bubble Rush event.

The Bubble Rush is a vibrant 2.5km fun run filled with colourful foam stations along the course, open to participants of all ages who donate to take part. Laughter, bubbles, and charitable spirit filled the air, as more than 800 people came together for a day of giving raising an impressive £25,000 for EACH.
The Masonic involvement in this event followed a charitable donation made by St. Wendred Lodge (No. 8374, Newmarket) to EACH. During a visit to ‘The Treehouse’ hospice in Ipswich to present the donation, W.Bro. John Malone learned more about EACH’s incredible work and their ongoing need for volunteers. Inspired by what he saw and heard, W.Bro. Malone rallied a group of fellow Masons and their families to assist with the upcoming Newmarket event.
Their support proved invaluable. From setting up the course to marshalling the route, the volunteer team helped ensure the event ran smoothly even when the weather didn’t entirely cooperate. Spirits remained high throughout the morning, with everyone delighted to have played a part in such a worthwhile cause.
EACH expressed their thanks, stating: “Thank you again for giving up your Sunday to support Bubble Rush! Your support means the world and we could not run that event without you.”
W.Bro. Malone extended his gratitude to those who answered his call to action: Bro David Oaks (Etheldreda Lodge No. 2107), W.Bro. John Butler (Gild of St. Mary Lodge No. 7288), W.Bro. Tim Shorey, Bro. Sean Scott (St. Wendred Lodge), and all their family members who gave up their time to help make the day a success.
And who knows, next year, this team of dedicated volunteers might just trade their hi-vis jackets for running shoes and join the fun as competitors!
