Fenland Tales

 |

Fenland Tales is a collection of stories describing how the Brethren of Descensus Aquarum Lodge 8655 in Ely, together with their families, experienced and responded to the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic between March 2020 and July 2021, and the role Freemasonry played during that time.

The decision was taken to publish these accounts as part of the Lodge’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in the autumn of 2025. They offer a quiet reflection on an extraordinary period, serving both as a historical record and as an illustration of Masonic companionship and mutual support.

The stories are drawn largely from contributions to the Lodge’s online newsletter, The Third Rising. Together, they demonstrate how the brotherhood of Freemasonry provided personal support at a time when companionship was greatly needed, and how that care extended beyond the Lodge through sustained charitable activity within the local community.

During the initial lockdown, the Lodge adapted quickly by establishing a Facebook group, holding regular Zoom gatherings, publishing a monthly newsletter, and organising online raffles and social events. These activities not only maintained contact between members but also raised significant funds for local charities. Our Charity Steward in 2025, W.Bro. John Sinclair, recounts how matched funding further increased the impact of these efforts.

Although the pandemic brought undeniable hardship, the Lodge also discovered unexpected benefits. Members came to know one another in new ways, artistic and practical talents emerged, and an important historical archive was created and preserved.

The stories that follow are honest and varied. Some Brethren were little affected, while others faced serious challenges, including illness and financial pressure. Collectively, they reflect the resilience, generosity, and everyday character of Freemasons, and provide a positive insight into the values that continue to guide the Lodge.
